Internship w. Fafard Inc.

My second semester-long internship also proved extremely beneficial. Fafard Inc. is a potting soil manufacturing company which has an in house graphics department that provides nurseries and garden centers with point of purchase displays and advertisement featuring Fafard products. As a graphic artist intern I worked with clients via email communication for all aspects of the job. This internship gave me a wonderful opportunity to work on large scale banner projects with a large amount of creative freedom. I have included some examples from this internship below.

Another project presented the opportunity to create stickers in order to learn and better comprehend the flexo printing process. Below are samples of one color and four color press runs. Each design was created within Adobe Illustrator.

Internship w. Tiger Town Graphics

My first semester-long internship was with a local college town screen printing company. There I worked as a Pre-press intern where I worked with clients to document their orders, ideas, and concepts. My duties also involved, proofing files, maintaining the image setter’s supplies, outputting files for production as well as designing t-shirts for clients. Working with tight deadlines made organization and time management key elements to ensure customer satisfaction. Featured below are some of my favorite designs I created that were printed during my internship. All the the following images are original creations generated in Adobe Illustrator.

Gameboard

For a Technical Writing English course several group projects were assigned. One in particular required students to create their own game, complete with rules and all the elements to actual play the game. Working together, we chose a theme and divided the work. pictured below is the design I created in Adobe Illustrator for a gameboard which we actually printed and constructed in a similar style to the popular children’s game, Candyland. Cards, game pieces, and rules were generated by other group members.

Photography is not only a personal hobby but a driving passion as well. I have included an assortment of my favorite shots. The photos below are from a traditional photography course where I learned what some call the “old school” methods of developing my own film and prints.

Below are my photos taken to complete an artist emulation assignment. I chose Aurthur Tress, a 20th century photographer who created a specific collection of photographs entitled “The Dream Collector” which greatly intrigued me. Tress interviewed young children about the dreams they experience and then asked them to act out their dreams at strategic locations. The photographs taken during this acting session were later compiled to form the collection.

Another assignment paired students within the class and required individuals to shoot portraits as well as self portraits.

The self portrait below is a combination of three different prints of the same image that I cut, arranged, and sewed together. I wished to express how my hobbies of photography and sewing could be combined to provide a graphic representation of myself.

The following images are from a proposed project in which I wished to document the inspiration I find within the Spring season.

Graphic Communication Courses

The following samples are from a recent course I completed at Clemson University. A similar blog was created as a requirement of the course and can be viewed at http://kshocklart321.wordpress.com/

1. Our first assignment required each student to select a commonly known brand or slogan and produce a “spoof” of this brand. Here one can see I chose Green Giant and formulated a new brand to support the growing “green” trends found in marketing.

2. This assignment allowed for a lot of creativity as each student was to invent their own country and also create that country’s currency. Most elements were created in Adobe Illustrator with the exception of the photo of the flower and posterization of the woman which were both completed in Adobe Photoshop.

3. This assignment was more challenging and required the creation of one’s own Utopia and also demanded several images to be merged together. Using Adobe Photoshop I merged 5 original photos of different waterfalls into one giant waterfall.

In addition to the utopia image, this assignment also required one to create the destruction of the utopia. Here I also used original photos and Adobe Photoshop to create a fiery waterfall.

4. This assignment also relied heavily upon Adobe Photoshop and required one to create a “hybrid” animal or person merged from at least three different images. Here is my recreation of Cerberus, the guard dog of Hades where I also used original photographs of my dog.
